For the price of warrantying a range rover through car max? Your budget is $8400.
I found this:
Its a low mile, well maintained, fully locked and upgraded FZJ80 for $8000. Now its your turn, what can you buy for the just price of keeping the "best 4x4xFar" on the road?

Um, I could just buy another slightly ratty Series. That's the *real* B4x4xF.

its true, but how much to make it roadworthy?

well played. though its scary to imagine the running costs of such a fine machine.

There are roadworthy ones out there for that. Ratty in this case mostly means a less than straight body that needs a paint job like DAMN to look good at all. Which is by no means something of impact on roadworthiness.
Alternately, I could buy a $6k series and spend $2400 making it nicer. Did that already once, actually- needed doorpost and firewall repair and some mechanical stuff, but that was about exactly the butcher's bill on it total.

While I can appreciate these for their toughness and general ability, I cannot accept how shitty the 97 interior was. I almost bought a 97 6 cyl with 4" lift on almost done mickey thompsons for 2500$, but when I drove it, I was immediately turned off. IT is so freeeeeaaaaaking heavy and the motor has ZERO, and I mean ZERO, balls. Damn thing was so slow just getting up to surface street speed. It didn't feel like it had half the torque that my Rover has. Twas a sad day for me, because it could have been great, it coulda been a somebody....

4 inch lift with (I'm guessing) 35 inch tires? well yeah, its geared for 31.5 inch tires, you just went up 3 steps, of course its going to be gutless. I'm not saying they aren't slow, but I have no trouble keeping up with traffic even heavy laden up here in Utah with a 3 inch lift on 33's. I would say that they are on par with a JK 3.8 for speed, especially with big tires. The 1fz-fe is way down on hp, but its got the torque where it counts. people tend to over armor these too, making them heavier than they need to be for all but serious crawling.

Well, see there's your problem right there.

also, whats wrong with the interior? its not pretty but its well put together. No squeaks, rattles, loose pieces or dysfunctional buttons at 252k miles...that's the kind of interior I can get behind.

It is not a nice, comfortable rewarding place to be. Even in the upmarket Lexus, the interior feels, smells, and looks like it came from the Dollar store. Now if I paid a dollar for it that would be no big deal but those fuckers sell for 80k now, and the interior looks, smells, and feels the exact same, plus the sitting position is shitty, I don't like the Toyota seats where you sit low to the floor Tacoma, 4Runner, LC. Are there rattles, NVH, squeaks inside my Disco? Yes, but they are all endearing qualities.

man I hear you about the taco seating position, but its not an issue for my 80, they are much higher. No your right, its not a rewarding place to be, but I like the simplicity and honesty of it. it just...works.

$5000 for the Series IIa, $2600 for the D1 axles and Air Lockers and $300 for the R380 gear box. So $7900 total, not to shabby.

When it comes to simplicity, were I a rich man, I would be restomodding a Defender 110. Simple but yet sophisticated. Basically just a fully sorted out, mechanically upgraded to maybe 130% of original capabilities, V8, manual with nice exhaust, and a rich yet no frills interior (nice leather seats, great sound proofing, and a decent up to date stereo). Add in a minor lift, 31s, full roof rack (with strong flooring, hardmount points for fuel cans, 2 mtn bikes, mdeium sized pelican case with emergency tools and supplies) rear cargo area tool boxes, dog cage behind back seats with mounting brackets for 4 rifles, proper overlanding bumpers, fully updated lights and that is about all. Think Icon but without the Bro-ness.
